Yellowknife to choose between two surface types for indoor sports facilities

Public to provide feedback on preference between artificial turf and synthetic floor material

November 29, 2023  By Turf & Rec

Residents of Yellowknife, N.W.T. have a decision to make on what type of playing surface they deem best for the city’s two indoor arenas: artificial turf or a synthetic material similar to a gymnasium floor.

For half the year, the indoor fieldhouse arenas are venues for such sports as soccer, rugby, flag football and cricket. Both surfaces are currently carpeted, but not considered ideal.

The public is encouraged to try samples of the two proposed surface types and provide their feedback. If artificial turf is favoured, it would help to perpetuate existing programs. The synthetic material, on the other hand, could open the door for such sports as volleyball or futsal as well as trade shows and other off-season events.

A synthetic material floor may not be conducive to such sports as soccer but may contribute to additional facilities beyond what is available at school gymnasiums.

About $300,000 has been allocated for the project, but it’s only enough to surface one of the two floors. No matter which surface type is chosen, it will be laid in interlocking sections.
