A pair of newly constructed artificial turf sport field have opened for play in Nanaimo, B.C.

The side-by-side all-weather fields are equipped with LED lighting. The fields replace the natural Sherry Fields at Harewood Centennial Park and are located adjacent to John Barsby Secondary School.

Officials are touting the fields’ shock absorbency and their ability to drain quickly, claiming they will lend themselves to speed and safety. The previous fields on site had end zones that were three yards too short.

The fields will see play from football, soccer, lacrosse and minor baseball user groups. Nanaimo’s general manager of community services says the fields will require only two to three hours per week for maintenance and grooming.
