Player injuries on gravel baseball diamond prompt municipality to explore upgrades
Gravel surface also causing erratic ball bounces and damaged unforms
September 20, 2023 By Turf & Rec
Citing player injuries, erratic ball bounces and damage to uniforms, the Beaver Valley Athletic Association in the Blue Mountains, Ont. has asked council to replace the gravel surfaces of local ball diamonds with a clay product.
Three baseball fields at Moreau Park in Thornbury were specifically mentioned. The association’s past president said it’s been several years since the fields underwent any significant upgrades.
One local councillor agreed it’s unsafe for players to be sliding on gravel while the mayor suggested the issue be resolved.
The municipality’s CAO recommended measures to resolve the issue be placed among the 2024 budget discussions.
