North Bay, Ont. has earmarked $140,000 in its budget this year to search for an appropriate site to build a new cricket field.

The allocation of money will go toward a search for the site as well as engineering related to the development of a regulation size field.

An official from the North Bay Cricket Club told city council that having a proper playing field would attract teams to the city. Teams don’t want to play in North Bay, he added, because the field currently in use is uneven and can lead to player injuries.

A suggestion that cricket players use baseball fields to play isn’t feasible, the cricket club says, because ball field dimensions aren’t conducive for cricket play.

The club currently has about 150 members, but continues to grow.
