New cricket field coming to Thunder Bay as sport grows in popularity
Field will provide home venue for proposed international league
November 7, 2023 By Turf & Rec
A new cricket field is coming to Thunder Bay, Ont.’s Current River Park.
While hundreds of cricket enthusiasts already play the game on a former baseball diamond at the city’s Chapples Park, the new field will have dimensions more conducive to playing cricket.
The field, expected to open next summer, will give Thunder Bay a true home field as efforts are underway to establish a competitive league that will include teams from Ontario, Manitoba and Minnesota.
The former ball diamond site is used six days a week by the Kombans Cricket Club as well as twice a week for a youth program.
The city was approached last winter for the construction of a new cricket field. The growing popularity of the game has been spearheaded by southeast Asian students attending Lakehead University and Confederation College. The field is expected to measure 130 metres by 100 metres.
