Mini soccer court idea pitched for New Westminster, B.C. park space

Council receptive to concept of basketball court-sized playing facility

July 12, 2023  By Turf & Rec

A proposal for a mini soccer court in New Westminster, B.C. is being considered by local council.

Mini soccer courts are the same approximate size of basketball courts and are considered ideal for smaller groups to play or for practising skills. Because of their smaller size, they can be fit into spaces where land isn’t available for full-sized fields, including urban settings.

A pitch for the concept was made before council earlier this week, grabbing the attention of some councillors. One suggestion was to incorporate a soccer court into an upcoming park in the city. The expansion of Westminster Pier Park was one such example.

The city’s parks and recreation department will soon be dealing with its comprehensive plan, and the concept may be discussed at that time, New Westminster’s acting parks and recreation department director noted.
