Baseball group up in arms over proposal to eliminate diamonds in favour of pickleball courts

Peterborough, Ont. association say existing diamonds don't meet baseball-specific needs

March 1, 2024  By Turf & Rec

The Peterborough Baseball Association is not happy about proposed plans for the redevelopment of Bonnerworth Park.

The proposal is to eliminate two existing diamonds at the park to make way for 16 pickleball courts, an expanded skate park and a bike pump park. The association is urging supporters to rally at an upcoming public meeting this month to voice their displeasure.

A study has suggested there are ample diamonds within the municipality to accommodate play for all league users, but the local baseball association argues there is a lack of field requirements that are specific to baseball and existing diamonds are more conducive for softball or slo-pitch.

Adding to the association’s concerns is a growing registration for baseball. The association wishes to have representation regarding decision-making policies involving baseball fields.
