University study shows winter road salt doesn’t impair bioretention plants

Research offers food for thought for municipalities

Studies conducted at the Université de Montréal suggest that certain bioretention plants are not impaired by road salt. Four plant species were tested in a simulation of spring runoff with three of them unaffected: red osier dogwood, soft rush and blue flag. The results of the studies indicate that municipalities can benefit from the installation of bioretention areas.
