District of Saanich exploring ways to help with proposed artificial turf field project

Condition of existing natural field has prevented home games from being played for years

A project to install an all-weather artificial turf field at a District of Saanich, B.C. school – stalled during the COVID-19 pandemic – is being discussed again at the council level.

Council has directed staff to look into potential sponsorships with Spectrum Community School for the project.

The project was originally conceived in 2019 to have an artificial turf surface replace the existing natural field which has been deemed almost unusable. The field’s poor conditions have prevented the school from playing home sports games for about 15 years.

It’s estimated a new artificial turf surface and clubhouse will cost $2.7 million. About $1 million had been committed toward the project by the community.

About 13 different organizations would potentially benefit from a newer facility.

Victoria Spartans Football, one of the recognized user groups, has said there aren’t enough fields in the region to accommodate user groups’ needs.,
