Sherwood Park soccer group frustrated by ongoing delays to indoor playing facility

Booming registrations have soccer athletes practising in school gymnasiums

Ongoing delays in the construction of an indoor field house in Sherwood Park, Alta. has local soccer players frustrated.

The Sherwood Park District Soccer Association has asked Strathcona County Council to ensure there aren’t further delays of what the association considers to be a vital need in the community.

About $8 million was spent last year on land and design work. With capital projects being reprioritized, however, design work was moved to 2025 and 2026 while construction was set to begin in 2028,.

The soccer association has been asking for more playing space since 2014. The association has about 2,200 registered players, but only two existing indoor fields at Millennium Place. The lack of playing space has reduced game and practice times, forcing athletes to use indoor school gymnasiums for practice sessions, but they argue the surface isn’t conducive to proper play.

The association suggests a phased-in construction process should be pursued, allowing something to be established sooner than later that would address the need for playing facilities.
