Demolishing indoor soccer facility for development puts hundreds of teams out
Mayor of Montreal suburb says city was blindsided, calling it a 'disaster'
November 14, 2023 By Turf & Rec
The end of winter soccer for many in the Montreal suburb of Lachine has come for many following the demoltion of the Catalogna Soccerplexe.
Lachine Mayor Maja Vodanovic termed the facility’s demolition a “disaster,” adding the city was blindsided by developers two years ago who bought the property with plans to build condominiums. She said the area hadn’t been zoned for residential use.
The demise of the facility has displaced hundreds of soccer teams that used the Soccerplexe each week.
Although there are other indoor soccer fields west of the downtown, they are unable to accommodate the number of displaced soccer players who played in Lachine.
A feasibility study is being conducted to see if a new indoor soccer complex can be built in nearby LaSalle.
