Oakville, Ont. exploring the end of gasoline-powered lawn maintenance equipment
Staff instructed to look into potential ban

Oakville, Ont. is looking to potentially ban the use of gasoline-powered lawn maintenance equipment by both municipal staff and the general public.
Council has instructed city staff to determine how such a ban can be implemented. Such as ban would include mowers, trimmers and leaf blowers and is designed to address the city’s climate emergency that has been in effect for a year and a half.
City staff has determined about 27 per cent of local emissions originate from residential energy use and nearly 25 per cent from the commercial, industrial and institutional sectors. Transportation emission account for about half.
Coun. Ray Chisholm, who put forth the motion to explore a ban, said a movement toward battery and electric-powered equipment has been making progress, but admitted some time will likely be necessary to make the transition from gasoline to battery or electric.
