Ban of gasoline-powered lawn maintenance equipment could begin next year in California

California may be poised to become the first U.S. state to ban the purchase of gasoline-powered lawn mowers and other landscaping equipment, perhaps as early as next year.

Such a ban would address the level of emissions and noise output associated with the tools. The emissions from small off-road engines is said to produce more pollution in the state than every car in California.

The gasoline vs. electric debate in the state has proven to be a controversial topic, with many Republicans and gas companies who say invoking a ban restricts consumer choice.

It’s speculated a ban could transform the U.S. suburban landscape which, since the end of the Second World War, saw Americans take pride in the maintenance of their yards. Many Americans aren’t ready to switch to battery-powered mowers and landscaping tools because of the higher price.
