Midland, Ont. says complaints against No Mow May to be countered through education

Council to receive staff report about the merits of strategy to attract pollinators

May 2, 2023  By Turf & Rec

Midland, Ont. will discuss the merits of adopting the No Mow May strategy at its council meeting tomorrow.

A planning, building and bylaw department report is expected to be received by council for its support of the program aimed to attract and feed pollinators. The report suggests lawns are urban centres’ largest vegetative areas for attracting bees and butterflies.

The municipality has acknowledged there are apt to be complaints made about the unsightliness of unkempt yards, but vow to counter any negative feedback through education and public engagement.

Experts from the University of Guelph have recently stated that No Mow May is detrimental to the long-term health of turfgrass.
