City backs Cornwall councillor’s push to get multi-sport recreational facility underway

$7.6-million facility to include natural, artificial turf fields, lighting, irrigation and drainage

Support for a new multi-sport outdoor recreational facility in Cornwall, Ont. is being given by city council, but one councillor wants to move on the project before it sits idle and collects “dust.”

Coun. Dean Hollingsworth put forward a motion in the fall to retain a consulting firm that would produce a conceptual design of the facility and outline its budget. Council has supported his wish to get the project underway.

A feasibility report presented to council estimates the cost of building a multi-sport artificial turf field, including lighting, irrigation and drainage, would be $3.5 million. The cost of additional amenities, including full-size natural turf fields, a clubhouse, parking and scoreboard, brings the estimated total to $7.6 million.

The project is slated for the city’s Benson Centre. The Bob Turner Centre is currently accommodating only football.
