Calgary city council entertains preliminary plans for multi-sport indoor facility

Field house could cost $250 million and accommodate multiple sporting events simultaneously

A preliminary plan for a multi-sport field house in Calgary has been presented to city council.

The plan is for the facility to include an artificial turf playing surface, a track and field area and space for a gymnasium. The facility, which is proposed for the Foothills Athletic Park, is intended to be large enough to accommodate a field soccer field and warm-up space, or a football field or two fastball fields.

The gymnasium would be large enough for a full-sized basketball or volleyball court along with seating for spectators and possibly badminton and other basketball courts.

Plans are for a 200-metre track that meets international standards and an eight-lane, 100-metre track for sprints.

The facility’s goal is to be able to accommodate several sporting events happening simultaneously.

The city will be undertaking a design phase and will consult with Sport Calgary member groups about their needs. The estimated cost of a multi-sport field house is $250 million, but annual revenue to the city could range between $20 million and $50 million. Construction could begin as early as 2025 with a projected opening in 2027.
