Chatham committee struck to look into constructing second full baseball field in city

Fergie Jenkins Field too busy to accommodate older baseball players

December 14, 2023  By Turf & Rec

A second regulation-size baseball field has been proposed for Chatham, Ont. which currently has only one field to properly accommodate play among athletes 14 years and older.

Fergie Jenkins Field at Rotary Park is the city’s lone baseball facility conducive for older players yet is busy with men’s leagues and minor baseball teams. It will see even more use this summer as the Chatham Barnstormers will be calling the field their home for Intercounty Baseball League play.

During periods of tournament play at Fergie Jenkins Field, local teams often have to travel out of town to Wallaceburg to use its field.

A “Field of Dreams” committee has been struck in an effort to construct a new field in the city. The group is looking into partnerships and fundraising opportunities.

The committee will be meeting with the municipality in the new year to discuss planning and a feasible site.
