Sunday's Super Bowl marked first year without involvement of veteran field specialist

Sunday’s Super Bowl game marked the first time in in the 58-year history of the event that fabled turf specialist George Thoma wasn’t involved in the venue’s preparations. Often referred to as “The Godfather,” the 95-year-old Thoma retired last year after having overseen field preparations for each of the previous 57 Super Bowl games. His last involvement for 2023’s Kansas City Chiefs-Philadelphia Eagles games was mired in controversy, however.
