Winnipeg has declared 2021 as the Year of the Elm Tree, with hopes of educating the public toward saving the city’s remaining elm trees from succumbing to Dutch elm disease. More than 33,000 elm trees have been lost to the disease since 2016. In spite of the losses, Winnipeg still lays claim to having the largest population of American elm trees of any city in North America.
