Snow contractors becoming a dying breed as insurance rates continue to soar
Many can no longer afford to stay in business
November 30, 2021 By Toronto Star
Snow removal contractors are fast becoming a dying breed. As the number of slip-and-fall lawsuits continue to mount, insurance companies are becoming more reluctant to insure contractors, or have increased their rates so high that contractors are getting out of the business. An Ontario cottage country contractor, who has never had a claim against him in his 20 years of business, learned last year his longtime insurer was no longer covering plows. Shopping around for other companies willing to provide coverage, he found one that jacked his rates 70 per cent and then wished to increase it even more this year. The contractor has decided to call it quits.
