Safety netting at North Bay sports park will keep soccer players protected against foul balls

No one hit yet by errant baseball, but there have been close calls

Youth soccer players in North Bay, Ont. will no longer have to look over their shoulders for fear of being hit by a foul ball from an adjacent baseball diamond.

Safety netting has been erected at Veterans Park to keep errant baseballs from entering the soccer field and potentially striking players and spectators. The city said the netting was installed for precautionary reasons, adding no one has yet been hit on the soccer field even though there have been some close calls.

The lack of netting last season prompted the city to not schedule soccer games to be played at the south end of the park.

The cost of the safety netting and infrastructure was $129,975, approved by council last spring. The netting was originally slated to be installed last summer, but supply chain issues delayed the project.
