Gardening writer shares the do’s and don’ts of the ‘leave the leaves’ campaign
Mulching leaves is beneficial but can harm hibernating insects

A movement to “leave the leaves” is garnering more attention as we move further into fall, but a gardening writer for the Associated Press says there are do’s and don’ts to be considered. Leaves should be mulched, she says, and left atop lawns as a soil conditioner. Shredding leaves, however, poses the risk of killing hibernating insects, including pollinators whose existence is important in the spring.
