The go-ahead has been given for the conceptual design of a multi-sport artificial turf field in Cornwall, Ont.

Council has approved the necessary funding for the design at the city’s Benson Centre. The project’s first phase includes both the design and coming up with a more refined project budget. Half of the approximately $100,000 cost for the project first phase will be covered by development charges revenue while the remainder will be funded through such other sources as the Canada Community Building fund and debt financing.

The Benson Centre’s turf is part of the development charges study with half of the cost to be covered while council will be responsible for funding the other half through budgeting.

The cost of building a multi-sport artificial turf field, including such additions as lighting, irrigation and drainage, is expected to be about $3.5 million. Other recreational amenities slated for the centre include full-size natural turf fields, costing about $750,000 per field, clubhouse construction or expansion at about $1.5 million, additional parking at about $1 million, and a scoreboard and public address system at about $385,000.
