BMO Field in tiptop shape for weekend’s Major League Soccer home opener of Toronto FC
Head of grounds says field conditions perhaps the best ever for a home opener

Toronto’s BMO Field is in perhaps the best shape it’s ever been ahead of Toronto FC’s home opener on March 9.
Head of grounds Robert Heggie said the playing surface is in outstanding shape for early March. The process of getting the field ready for the Major League Soccer season began last November following the Eastern Division final of the Canadian Football League. The field is shared by Toronto FC and the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts.
Excess organic material was removed from the surface following the final CFL contest, allowing the artificial turf fibres – which account for about five per cent of the field’s blades – to spring back to life.
The field was covered in January, but the covering was recently removed to allow for the deployment of grow lights.
Rain has been forecast to coincide with the Toronto FC’s home opener, but Heggie said the field drains well and shouldn’t cause any problems.
