Sault Ste. Marie park erects fencing to keep snowmobiles, ATVs off sports fields
Access to walking trail granted until snow's arrival
November 21, 2023 By Turf & Rec
Fencing has been erected along the Hub Trail at Sault Ste. Marie’s Strathclair Park to keep motorized vehicles off the soccer and softball fields.
Although the fencing is meant to protect the sports fields from damage, it was seen as an inconvenience by others, including a cyclist who couldn’t access the Hub Trail along Second Line East. The cyclist’s displeasure, which was posted on social media, has led to the opening of a gate near the entrance to Strathclair Sports Complex so that users can access the trail. The gate is to remain open until the arrival of snow.
The city chose to erect the fencing to keep snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles away from the sports fields. An increase in foot traffic has been reported along the winter walking trails on the soccer and ball fields.
The portion of the trail between St. Mary’s College and Strathclair won’t be maintained during the winter.
