Safety issues prompt need to reconfigure sports fields in Ontario township

Baseballs, soccer balls entering each other's fields

July 17, 2023  By Turf & Rec

Some sports fields in the Township of Arran-Elderslie, Ont. are to be reconfigured for safety reasons.

Currently, the spacing between soccer and baseball fields is considered insufficient and is apt to have balls entering each other’s playing space. The issue first became apparent last year.

A concern with the reconfiguration of sports fields is that the local agricultural society’s horse tie-ups presents a potential hazard for players. A temporary reconfiguration was made in 2022, but it was deemed corner kicks on the soccer field couldn’t be executed safely.

Other issues include the need for topsoil and field leveling to reduce the chances for player injuries. Plans are to add topsoil and reseed low points of the soccer field at the end of the current season and roll the field at the start of the 2024 season.
