National Safety and Health Week is being celebrated next week across Canada.

The week presents a time for employers, employees, partners, and the public to focus on the importance of preventing injury and illness in the workplace, at home, and in the community. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety is partnering with the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering and Threads of Life for the May 1-6 special week.

Seamus O’Regan Jr., minister of labour, will officially kick off the week with greetings from the federal government. Threads of Life family speaker Virginia Campeau will also share her personal story about the loss of her husband in a workplace incident. The week will continue with thought-provoking sessions on psychological health and inclusion in the workplace and will wrap up with a guided meditation.

Prior to Safety and Health Week is the National Day of Mourning on April 28 which serves to remember and honour those lives lost or injured due to a workplace tragedy, and to collectively renew commitments to improve health and safety in the workplace and prevent further injuries, illnesses and deaths.
