Return of winter weather delays golf course openings in Alberta and Saskatchewan

Edmonton-area course sees silver lining in receiving much-needed moisture

April 18, 2024  By Turf & Rec

A snow and ice storm Wednesday in Edmonton put a damper on Victoria Golf Course’s scheduled opening day, but there was an upside to the weather.

With Alberta still in the throes of drought conditions, the golf course welcomed the moisture. The course was expected to close for one or two days afterwards before trying again with a delayed season opener.

It was a similar situation for golf courses in Saskatchewan where about 10 centimetres of snow fell late last week in some areas along with a cold snap that plunged temperatures to about minus 10 degrees Celsius.

The Valleyview Golf Club in Delisle might have opened by now if not for the snow cover. The club plans to remove tarps from its greens within the next few days and allow the weather to warm up before officially opening for the season.
