North York foreperson wins Sheard scholarship

October 5, 2016  By  Mike Jiggens

A recent graduate of the University of Guelph’s turf managers’ short course has become the recipient of Sports Turf Canada’s Robert W. Sheard Scholarship.

Rachel Macmillan, foreperson of sports fields/integrated plant health care program for North York, Ont., submitted an essay titled, “Environmental benefits of healthy turfgrass” as her entry requirement. The essay is slated to be published in the autumn issue of Sports Turf Manager.

The scholarship was established in 1993 to encourage, support and provide leadership to those considering a career in the sports turf industry. It was renamed in 2007 to honour Dr. Sheard, who was a longtime educator at the University of Guelph.

It is funded through association membership fees, and is intended to assist students with the cost of tuition, books and related expenses. The application deadline for 2017 is May 30.
