Anniversary tournament attracts more than 80 golfers

Chatham-Kent’s Ridgetown Golf & Country Club celebrated its 100th anniversary on the weekend.
The GolfNorth property has a storied history, originally opening on an old farm field. The club moved to another farm site as a nine-hole course before expanding to 18 holes in 1954.
A commemorative tournament was played on Sunday, attracting more than 80 golfers. Among the guests at the event was Doug Breen, vice-president and supervisor for GolfNorth, who noted the centennial milestone was a major achievement, adding most golf courses don’t see 100 years of operation.
Breen, a former golf course superintendent, singled out Ridgeview superintendent Jim Gammage for his many years of ensuring the course was in tiptop condition.
The golf course today plays almost 6,100 yards in length.
