Burlington wants Ontario government to intervene in Millcroft golf development proposal

Petition opposing development of golf course bears 1,500 signatures

The City of Burlington has appealed to the Ontario government to intervene in its want to protect the Millcroft Golf Course from development.

Developer Argo Development Corporation has proposed the established of 90 single detached homes on the property along with a six-storey residential apartment building.

The city has opposed the development bid, and the matter is currently before the Ontario Land Tribunal. A 1,500-signature petition urges the province’s minister of municipal affairs and housing to reject the development proposal.

Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward says the province can prevent the proposed development, citing the land as being of provincial interest. Those opposing the development say the property is an important green space that supports stormwater mitigation and is an important habitat for several species.

The mayor added that although Millcroft could one day cease to operate as a golf course, the property must continue as green space.
