Ottawa wants athletes off its sports fields to allow ample time for them to dry up

Fields will be monitored for possible earlier-than-normal opening

Please keep off the grass.

Although local athletes may be eager to take to soccer and baseball fields amid the recent mild weather, the City of Ottawa wants the public to stay off city sports fields, saying they need time to dry and be maintained.

The fields face potential damage if they are used prematurely while still wet. Snow melt has come early this year and temperatures have been above normal for this time of year, but fields aren’t yet ready for play.

The city plans to monitor its fields during the spring to access whether they’re ready for an earlier start.
