Huge spike in insurance premiums forces Medicine Hat snow contractor to close shop
Rate jumps from $4,000 a year to $21,000

A Medicine Hat, Alta. snow contractor – one of the largest in the city – has closed up shop as a consequence of a spike in insurance premiums. Escalating insurance rates have been wreaking havoc on private snow and ice contractors, forcing some to close and others to reduce services or pass the increased costs onto customers. Chris Steinley, operator of Prostein Property Maintenance for the past 10 years, said his rates increased from $4,000 a year to $21,000 last winter.
