Cornwall, Ont. to look into feasibility of outdoor recreation facility

Site recommended in latest master plan not embraced by all sports groups

A new outdoor recreation facility could be in the offing for Cornwall, Ont.

The city has instructed its staff to prepare a report on the feasibility of a facility. Coun. Dean Hollingsworth said if an outdoor field sports hub is given the green light, it could take about five years before it comes to fruition. He said there is no preset plan as to where such a facility might be located, suggesting Joe St. Denis Field could be the best possible site.

Cornwall’s general manager of planning, development and recreation said the recreation facility proposal is broad in scope, and wished to know which leagues might be involved.

The most recent recreation master plan recommended the Benson Centre area as a site in which the best outdoor sports facilities could be grouped together. Not all of the city’s sports associations have embraced the suggestion, however. The idea of relocating baseball diamonds from Legion Park to the Benson Centre area hasn’t been well received
