Location of facility sparked controversy

City council in Barrie, Ont. has approved a combined synthetic sports field and Sea Cadets parade ground east of Military Heritage Park along the city’s waterfront.

The project has been embroiled in controversy since its proposal, and was approved late Wednesday by council following hours of deputations. The waterfront location has been at the heart of the controversy, with those opposed saying the area should remain as a naturalized zone.

Although those opposed agreed a new field and parade ground were needed in the city, it was suggested the city look elsewhere.

Two city councillors voted against the approved location for the 100 by 154-metre facility that will cost more than $9 million to construct. Council heard from 27 people making deputations that lasted 2.5 hours.
