Local arborist shocked by hardwood losses

Ottawa’s urban forest has been transformed in the wake of the past weekend’s “derecho” – a high-wind event that uprooted, toppled or destroyed a multitude of trees. A local arborist says he was shocked that the storm that swept across southern Ontario and into Quebec managed to take out such deep-rooted hardwood trees as maples, oaks and poplars. Ottawa’s landscape will never be the same, he said.
