New Guelph executive course set to open later in April

April 3, 2012  By  Mike Jiggens

Thanks to the DeCorso family of Guelph, Southern Ontario will soon have
a new executive course to enjoy when Victoria Park Valley Golf Club
opens this spring.

With 27 holes on beautiful rolling countryside just south of Guelph, the Scott Covell-designed Victoria Park Valley provides a fun executive-course experience. It fills the void left by the closure late last season of Victoria Park West Golf Club, which was also operated by the DeCorso family, known for providing affordable public golf in the area for 45 years.

"With memorable views and a variety of challenges, Victoria Park Valley Golf Club is wonderful to walk and all ages and skill levels will enjoy it," said John DeCorso, whose family also operates Victoria Park East Golf Club, a respected 18-hole championship course.

Victoria Park Valley Golf Club features large tee decks, gently undulating greens, well-drained Ohio-sand bunkers, and a fully grassed practice range. The three unique nines are all par 31 and less than 2,100 yards. There are 16 par-threes, 10 par-fours, and one par-five.

The course is set on moderately tumbling land just south of Victoria Park East Golf Club at the northeastern corner of Maltby Road East and Victoria Road South. Course construction began in the spring of 2010 and was completed last year. The course was left to grow in for most of 2011 to ensure the turf conditions were exceptional—a hallmark of Victoria Park courses.

Continuing the Victoria Park tradition of providing great golf value, the new Valley course offers some of the lowest green fees in the region. Monday to Thursday, excluding holidays, adults can play nine holes for only $25 or 18 holes for $35. On weekends or holidays, it's still a reasonable $28 for nine, or $40 for 18. Just like Victoria Park West, Victoria Park Valley caters to families, offering a $5 discount to junior golfers accompanied by a full-paying adult.

Until the Valley is ready for its first drive in late April or early May—the grand opening is slated for May 12—area golfers can enjoy Victoria Park East Golf Club, which opened on March 15.

"We are excited to bring this new course to the Guelph and Southern Ontario golf market," said DeCorso, marketing and clubhouse manager. "The family-friendly facility suits time-starved golfers seeking good value, yet it also offers a test for beginners and low handicappers alike."
