Studies of artificial turf’s safety may not include newer generation surfaces: physician
Other factors need to be taken into account to determine playing surface safety

Scientists are still studying the merits of natural and artificial turf surfaces to determine which is the safest for athletes. They note, however, there are other factors that must be considered such as the age of athletes, their type of footwear, weather conditions and if the sport involves physical contact.
The debate about which surface is safest recently intensified following the Achilles tendon injury to New York Jets’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Dr. Calvin Hwang, a physician for the Stanford University football team, says studies done five or six years ago on artificial turf might not be taking into account newer generation turf which has evolved technology and may be significantly safer than previous generations.
