Hundreds of Canadian communities are participating this year in both the national and provincial editions of Communities in Bloom, a non-profit program that fosters civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community involvement.
In addition to the Canadian participants, other countries including the United States, Belgium, Croatia and Northern Ireland will be competing in the International Challenge.
Three levels of competition form Communities in Bloom: provincial, national and international. Volunteer judges will visit the participating communities during the months of July and August to evaluate their overall performance in such areas as tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscape and floral displays. As community involvement is the essence of the program, the evaluation, which provides guidance on further steps of improvement, is based on the local conditions and achievements of citizens, businesses, organizations, institutions and the municipal government working together towards common objectives.
Communities will be rated from one to five “blooms.”
National and international results will be announced Sept. 13-16 at Communities in Bloom’s symposium and awards ceremonies in Ottawa/Gatineau. To view the list of national and international finalists, click here.
