City official says vandals knew what they were doing

Vandalism to about 30 trees at the Halifax Public Gardens has been estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Sometime between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, an individual or group tore strips of bark from several tree trunks – many of which were between 50 and 200 years old. The city’s senior supervisor of urban forestry says the damage appears to have been done with a hatchet or small axe by someone or those who knew what they were doing.
