Efforts to eradicate Japanese beetle populations in Vancouver are paying off, but the turfgrass pest continues to make its presence felt in other parts of British Columbia.

CBC News reports no Japanese beetles were found in Vancouver in 2024, marking the first time that has happened since their first appearance about eight years ago.

An official with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said that, left unchecked, the Japanese beetle could cause serious damage to golf courses, turf and parks. First detected in 2017 in Vancouver, more than 8,200 of the insects were reported by the following year.

Although Vancouver has reported success in its efforts to control the pest, other B.C. municipalities, including Port Coquitlam and Kamloops, detected populations in 2024.
