Some insurance companies dropping snow contractor clients, claiming risk is too great

As winter draws nearer, snow contractors’ livelihoods have been put in peril as insurance rates escalate beyond what they can afford. And, in some cases, insurance companies are outright ceasing to insure contractors, claiming the risk is too great. Muskoka Grounds Care, a Huntsville, Ont. business that has provided snow and ice maintenance services for its customers the past eight years, learned its insurance company is no longer insuring snow contractors. The maintenance company reached out to other insurers, but the cheapest quote given was for $91,000, compared to the $3,000 previously paid.
