School board looks to acquire part of city park to build artificial turf sports field

Thorold Secondary School one of few in Niagara without artificial turf field

A portion of one of Thorold, Ont.’s parks may be sold to the District School Board of Niagara to allow for the construction of an artificial turf sports field for use by Thorold Secondary School.

Council has opted to form a working group of councillors and community members to explore the idea.

The school is one of the only ones in the Niagara region without an artificial turf field. The school’s principal told council that such a field could also be used by other groups beyond school teams. The school anticipates an enrolment of about 1,000 students in the coming years.

One of the points of contention regarding a sale of part of McMillan Park to the school board involves the existence of a splash pad and where it might be relocated.q
