Proposed Thunder Bay indoor sports facility to be discussed again tonight by council

Staff has recommended moving forward with design-build request for proposal

The oft-debated indoor sports facility proposed in Thunder Bay, Ont. could potentially move forward today if council approves a recommendation from administration.

Staff has recommended moving forward with a design-build request for proposal which would see the facility built adjacent to the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium. The recommendation includes a bid cap of $42.7 million for the request for proposal.

Upon approval, construction of the facility is expected to begin in 2025.

The president of Soccer Northwest Ontario says he’s optimistic approval will be given, but added he hopes previously made mistakes won’t happen again. He noted it’s important that whatever is approved ensures no additional lofty costs deemed unnecessary aren’t added to the project.

An online survey indicated most of those polled favour the facility’s proposed location. Much of the project’s past debate centred around its location in the city.
