TWO neighbouring regional golf superintendents
associations from southern Ontario wrapped up their seasons Oct. 22 by engaging
in a friendly Ryder Cup-like match play tournament at the St. Thomas Golf &
Country Club in Union.
In
what was promoted as the first annual Syngenta Ryder Cup Superintendent Charity
Challenge, the host Greater London Association of Golf Superintendents (GLAGS)
soundly defeated the visiting Kent-Essex Golf Superintendents (KEGS) by a 14-7
margin.
Syngenta
Crop Protection Canada Inc. sponsored the event, putting up $500 to the winning
team’s charity of choice. The victorious GLAGS team chose to forward the
donation to the London-based Investing in Children, which works with community
partners to identify gaps and create unique opportunities for children and
families.
Last
year, Investing in Children had a direct impact on the lives of more than
14,000 children and their families, supported by more than 4,600 hours of
volunteer service. The charity’s current projects include after-school and
family literacy programs, tutoring, community arts projects and school
nutrition programs. Community projects manager Lisa Baxter said it also
coordinates a number of community-wide events, including Kids First Day,
National Family Literacy Day, and TVDSB Special Olympics.
Teams
of 14 golfers aside engaged in seven separate match play competitions, with
three points at stake per match. The first six holes involved alternating shots
between partners, with each one hitting the other’s shots through to the hole
and the best of the two scores recorded. The middle six holes were a scramble
format while the remaining six holes were a best ball format.
The
GLAGS team won five of the seven matches and managed to capture at least one
point in both remaining matches.
The
venue for the second annual Syngenta Ryder Cup Superintendent Charity Challenge
is the Maple City Golf & Country Club in Chatham at which KEGS will be the
host association.
