Opponents of waterfront sports field project take their protest to the streets

Protesters hope Barrie city council chooses alternate site

June 18, 2024  By Turf & Rec

Opponents of Barrie, Ont.’s plans to build an artificial turf sports field and Sea Cadets parade ground on the city’s waterfront are taking their cause to the streets.

Organized by Friends of Allandale Station Park, the protesters carried placards at the proposed project’s site Tuesday morning and plan a second rally tomorrow (June 19) morning.

Barrie Today reports the gatherings are in protest to the project’s location and not against the idea of the project itself. The group wants city council to revisit the issue and consider an alternate location.

The proposed $9.15-million project was originally to include a multi-sport field measuring 100 metres by 154 metres, but more recent plans are being made to reduce the size somewhat.
