There’s no shortage of industry-related activities and happenings
coming up over the next few months. Just because we won’t be tending
directly to turfgrass during this time, it doesn’t means things won’t
be any less busy.
The conference and trade show circuit will soon be upon us, and the education sessions at each of them will be second to none.
A preview of some of the major conferences is presented in this issue. These include a sneak peek at the Canadian International Turfgrass Conference and Show in Vancouver (a more detailed preview of that event will be presented in our upcoming January/February issue), Landscape Congress in Toronto, the Ontario Golf Superintendents Association’s conference in Windsor, Ont., the Ontario Turfgrass Symposium in Guelph, Ont., the Quebec Golf Superintendents Association’s conference in Saint-Hyacinthe, and the Southern Alberta Landscapers and Contractors’ Expo in Calgary.
Each of these events will offer cutting edge information to allow turfgrass professionals from all sectors of the industry to keep up with the changing times, especially when political will has altered the way in which we perform our jobs.
The scheduling of these conferences in 2011 is another story. There’s the good, the bad and possibly the ugly. The good is the joint effort by the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association and the Western Canada Turfgrass Association whose Canadian International Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show in Vancouver will be an all-inclusive event under one roof.
Cooperative efforts between such associations traditionally make for solid attendance figures and give regional attendees who like to attend both events a big break when it comes to travel arrangements.
The bad is the unfortunate scheduling in which both Landscape Congress and the Ontario Golf Superintendents Association conference will be overlapping one another. A number of exhibitors traditionally participate in both events, and this has undoubtedly created a nightmare for them. Several Ontario golf superintendents also find interest in what Landscape Congress has to offer and likely won’t be able to attend both events as they would normally do.
As for the ugly, well… there are those of us (present company included) who wish to attend both aforementioned conferences and will have some tiptoeing to do to accomplish both. If the weather is nasty, then things will indeed become ugly on the road between Toronto and Windsor.
That said, there is still a lot to be gained by attending these industry shows. Several new products will be on display at each of the events. To help whet your appetite for what you might see, turn to pages 57 through 61 of this issue where we present our annual Equipment Showcase, featuring some of the newest and innovative equipment available to the industry in 2011.
