School shuts down playground until soil lead levels deemed safe

Sept. 14, 2018 – Students attending Winnipeg’s Weston elementary school have been barred from using the school’s playground after it was revealed this week that soil in the area was contaminated by high levels of lead. The test that revealed the presence of lead was conducted 10 years ago, but the provincial government of the day chose not to disclose the information. Manitoba’s sustainable development department was to determine if the playground has since become safe to use.
