Newmarket launches study to better manage Canada geese populations with focus on safety

Striking a balance between birds and public is aim

A study is being launched in Newmarket, Ont. this year to determine best management practices in dealing with increasing Canada geese populations. The $25,000 study is aimed at striking a balance between geese populations and the general public without getting rid of the birds. The study’s focus is on safety for such things as feces in waterways and protecting the public from aggressive geese guarding their young. A local biologist says Newmarket’s numerous clear and grassy areas and proximity to water provide ideal nesting conditions and creates an “all-you-can-eat buffet” for the birds.
