A pair of Niagara Region Catholic high schools are getting new artificial turf sports fields, which are expected to be ready for play for the 2022-2023 season.

The Niagara Catholic District School Board is spending $3 million for fields to be installed at Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary School in Grimsby and Notre Dame College School in Welland.

Planning for the fields will be done this coming school year while construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2022.

The board has said it plans to ensure all eight high schools within its jurisdiction have artificial turf fields moving forward.

Board chairman Larry Huibers said investing in artificial turf fields will ensure student athletes will have playing facilities that are on par with those in other communities.
